Sibelius Wins an Innovate UK Smart Award to Uncover Complex Extracts' Mechanisms of Action

Oxford, UK, 10 February 2021 - Sibelius Natural Products is delighted to announce that the Company has won an Innovate UK Smart Award against very strong competition, as part of a collaborative application with the Clore Laboratory at the University of Buckingham. The award will support development of methods that help to uncover mechanisms of action that are responsible for the health benefits that complex natural products impart.

Sibelius is committed to investigating how its ingredients work, through molecular characterization and subsequent pre-clinical and clinical investigations as part of its proprietary Chronoscreen™ platform. The Company is constantly looking for new ways to complement these approaches to further its’ understanding on what triggers specific biological mechanisms.

Beyond knowing that an ingredient is safe and efficacious and can support health claims on consumer products, feedback from customers, distributors and partners has consistently highlighted a strong demand to understand both how and why an ingredient delivers its beneficial physiological effects.

“Sibelius has long been committed to bringing novel high-quality ingredients to the market and we truly believe that the science behind them makes a key difference” said Peter Leyland, CEO at Sibelius.

This new approach, when developed, will be utilized by scientists at Sibelius to support the identification of human proteins that are targeted by compounds within our ingredients, and therefore we can identify specific mechanisms-of-action that contribute towards the health benefits they impart.

In addition to providing a strong basis for novel IP protection, the new approach will also support continued development and science-based marketing of extracts. “Identifying the compounds present in complex extracts that can bind to human proteins, and what target proteins they bind to will provide invaluable insights” said Dr Kieron Edwards, CSO at Sibelius.

“This represents a great competitive advantage for finished product manufacturers and their formulators who will have access to a new level of understanding that will enable them to expand their pipeline with new evidence-based product innovations”, added Dr Edwards.

The method will provide Sibelius with a unique, world-leading capability to identify the putative active compounds and mechanisms of action for natural products at an unprecedented speed and scale. This represents a true category shift that delivers on real consumer needs for natural, plant-based solutions that are proven to work.
